We've all heard a lot of hype and bragging about how Mayor Doherty "Restored" the Park

Well, if you were an out of town visitor and saw all the "Thank you Mayor Doherty for Restoring the Park" signs, and heard him constantly bragging about his "restoration" of the park, and then you visited the park, here's what your reasonable inquiry would be:

IF THAT'S "RESTORED", WHAT THE HELL DID IT LOOK LIKE BEFORE?

The answer to that inquiry is that the condition of the pool area alone has been the same since Doherty took office, and in fact, it's much worse in numerous areas, not restored, as in many other places within the park. He restored nothing that was really desperate for attention and restoration. The areas of consistent public traffic and use were actually the most horrendous when he took office. Instead of addressing the priorities of safety and health issues in those high traffic areas, he planted flowers and had a $700,000.00 fish pond built that is a fishless, slimy monument to collusion if there ever was one. He built a $700,000.00 trail that is a disgraceful farce.  He had a new bath house built to replace one that was perfectly fine because all the plumbing burst (somehow) in the winter, with heat on in the building. Wonder what that was all about? What do you think? Politicians have to make money move from pocket to pocket before they can stop it in the pocket of choice.  That's what it's all about. It's old stuff. Why else does a man spend a half million to get a $50,000.00 a year job? That's what all this construction is about with Mayor Doherty. Millions was spent on unnecessary amenities and accoutrements while long neglected health and safety necessities went completely ignored.

Dear Mayor Doherty,
Don't say that you've restored the park when the inside and outside of the pool area is a shameful, hazardous and unsafe disgrace and everyday threat to the general public, especially little kids, as the pictures below will prove.

Date of pictures: July 17 through July 26, 2005
Some were taken before the public began to appear for the day, and others were taken after they appeared. One month prior to these pictures being taken, a letter of dissatisfaction regarding these conditions was sent to Mayor Doherty. These pictures represent his response. He did nothing.

THIS IS THE TRUTH ABOUT NAY AUG PARK!!!!

Concrete money for Crony friends in town, but not for the kids.

Above: This is the only operating diving board, for as sad as that is. The raised concrete slab is a real toe-stubber for the kids who line up on it.

pool75.jpg

Above: This didn't happen overnight. What is a word for well beyond irresponsible, negligent and totally incompetent? The word that comes to my mind is corrupt.

pool12.jpg

Above. The (right) high dive has no board, also badly neglected and has steps missing. No effort to stop kids from climbing it, and they were.

ip1.jpg

Above. The kids line up to dive off this neglected board. The depression where the five year-old child fell in is right behind them at the corner and there's a huge slab of toe-stubber, ankle-twister concrete raised up right where they are standing.

This has been this way the entire summer.

Above. Not five minutes after I snapped this picture, a five year-old girl fell into this depression.

pool9.jpg

pool11.jpg

Above. The left high dive is in worse shape than the right one. Also no board, missing steps and nothing to stop kids from climbing it. Disgraceful!!

pool77.jpg

lgrd1.jpg

Above: This lifeguard platform, like all others, was negligently modified with a piece of plywood so the lifeguard can kick back and relax, the plywood is dark in color and right at eye height, difficult to see when passing in front of the paltform.

Gross negligence, irresponsibility and incompetence everywhere

pool15.jpg

Above. This water was just a filthy slimy long pool that could have been broomed away, but no one even tried.

pool10.jpg

Above. Badly deteriorated from neglect. No board and nothing stops kids from getting on this platform. Many were diving off it.

If we're on the same page, the insult of Mayor Doherty using "Thank you for Restoring the Park" signs and commercials as a campaign to get re-elected goes deep.  And, where is Ray Hayes, the Public Safety Director? Where, ...in God's name is Mr. Scopeletti and the Pool Manager, Ryan McGowan? Resignations across the board are more than justified, and that's being gracious. Getting fired is too good for these so-called servants of the people.  $65,000.00 a year for Hayes and $50,000.00 a year for Scopeletti.  FOR WHAT???????
